Expat Advice: Living in Nicosia, Cyprus

Comments Print

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Nicosia

How long have you lived there?

2 years

What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?

Anglican Church Ladies Guild (for older women 45+), Birdlife Cyprus (for environmentalists), School PTA (for parents), University groups (for younger people)

In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.

City Cypriots are snobs, every one else is there to do them service. All declines in Cypriot society are attributed to the influx of foreigners. However, if you are a foreign investor, money launderer or job provider rather than a maid or other low paid worker, you are welcome and will find somewhere to live, school your kids, etc albeit at exorbitant rates.

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

Nicosia is the capital and seems to thrive on money derived from the UN, EU and expats. Most people find/create jobs through personal initiative. If Cypriot, they get jobs through who they know.

If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.

Think about why you are coming here, and if you want to do it and want to contribute to Cyprus - Welcome! There's lots of positives about the place for people who are seeking a better life than suburban England or America.
