Expat Advice: Living in Basking Ridge, United States

Comments Print

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Basking Ridge

What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?

There are all kinds of activities, and if you have kids, you can make a lot friends through participating in some way in their recreation. Many people take their church very seriously. Other than that, many people have lived here for a long time. If you can make a friend or two through work, your church or your neighborhood, they probably will help introduce you to their friends.

In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.

It's getting a bit more diverse. There is a Jewish Synagogue and South Americans are a growing population. However, it is mostly white. As far as I know people are tolerant in Basking Ridge.

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

There are offices for many corporations in or near Basking Ridge. AT&T was headquartered in Basking Ridge, and its huge, landmark office has been sold to Pharmacia. My opinion is that job searching is 90% networking. Get to it!

If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.

This is a great town, even if real estate costs are skyrocketing. The schools are great, but if you don't have kids and are looking for nightlife, you are going to have to go to Morristown or New York to get it. The town is quiet but there always seems to be some kind of activity in the heart of town. It's a great place for walking.
