What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?
I would recommend Toastmasters. It is a network of associations which are present in most big cities almost everywhere in the world. You meet there in order to practice your public speaking skills, which is at the same time fun and interesting. It is a great opportunity to meet nice and interesting people from various countries and to make friends. You can find a club near you at www.toastmasters.org.
