Expat Advice: Relationships in Buenos Aires, Argentina

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Buenos Aires

What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?

Dating

What is it like in your country of residence for someone with your relationship status (married/divorced/dating)? If you're single, how do you meet other people? Do English-speaking people tend to gravitate to certain parts of your city?

Meeting men and receiving compliment from them is easy in Argentina. But after having spent 6 months in Buenos Aires, I can tell you that these compliments are sexual harassment in disguise so don't be fooled and don't be flattered. The feminist movement has yet to reach BsAs. Some may argue that men's attitudes towards women are due to cultural differences, but these cultural differences are rooted in the fact that men have ZERO respect for women. I have met a SLEW of handsome men and only a few have earned my companionship and only 1 has earned my respect. The minute you begin to challenge men or begin to put up a fight, any woman will see that these handsome, lovable, seductive men are sexist, ignorant, and immature. There's no knocking any sense into their heads.

If you are married or in a relationship with a person of another nationality, how has this experience enriched you as a person. What kind of challenges do you face?

I seriously dated an Argentine man and at the beginning all was swell. As soon as matters got more serious did it become evident that cultural differences would make a peaceful, communicative relationship impossible. I believe he had good intentions, but he just wasn't used to a strong, independent American woman who demanded equality and respect!

What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?

Argentine men, as well as women, have a very bad reputation for a wide array of reasons. Please do some research online, read lots of blogs before you decide to give an argy a chance into a heart!
