Expat Advice: Relationships in London, UK
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
London
What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?
I have found it much easier (and better) to be a single woman (age 31) in London than I did in Houston and in Dallas, Texas. I read an article in the Metro (free newspaper available at Underground stations) last week that said that half of women in London were single - makes me not feel like the kind of minority I felt like in the states. Also, there are more people like me to be friends with. I have met my closest friends in the UK whilst travelling/on holidays, perhaps we've "clicked" because of our common interests (passion for travel!)
What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?
Best advice - go out and do what you enjoy, whether that be taking adult/continuing education classes, travelling, going to pubs/clubs, theatre, etc. You will make friends naturally, in the course of doing what you enjoy and in living your everyday life. Being a singleton in London can be a huge adventure - every day I learn something new and experience something different (and usually fun, or at least funny). I think that being a single expat has reinforced my sense of self identity and that I've changed a lot for the better. I wouldn't trade the experience of the past 21 months that I've lived in London for anything!
