Expat Advice: Relationships in Guanajuato, Mexico

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Guanajuato

What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?

I'm a single woman, 28. In Mexico romantic relationships are overrated. As woman, if you have almost 30 and still not married, people may think that you're a sad lonely person.

What is it like in your country of residence for someone with your relationship status (married/divorced/dating)? If you're single, how do you meet other people? Do English-speaking people tend to gravitate to certain parts of your city?

Foreigners are well received in the Mexican society, maybe for the self-aspiration of people to be part of another culture. It's called "malinchismo", I mean the tendency to believe that foreign people and product are much better than national ones.

So, if you're a foreigner and you're alone won't be rare that strangers come to you friendly trying to talk with you, most of them doesn't even speak fluent English. You can go and have a coffee, don't be afraid to be in a bar by yourself in Guanajuato, people may try to be your friends.

If you have children, what advice would you give to others making a similar transition to your country of residence?

Mexican people sell lots of food (such as fruits, ice cream) to street sellers, this may cause stomach sickness to your children, try not to eat everything during the first months.

Children, as adults are friendly, and Mexicans aren't very restricted to get dirty while playing, let your children to get in touch with other, this may let them to be stronger and well received in society. Always by adult supervision of course.

If you do not have children, do you generally spend your social time with other expat couples? If not, what else do you like to do as a couple?

En los bares. A curious issue about living in Mexico is that Mexicans who had already been overseas may find easy to get in touch with you, so with time you will notice the existence of specific groups of Mexicans and foreigners hanging out very often.

If you are married or in a relationship with a person of another nationality, how has this experience enriched you as a person. What kind of challenges do you face?

Mexican woman are very careful and committed while dating a foreign man, they're much beautiful than Mexican men. As foreigner it will be "easy" to find a date.

If you are a single parent, what advice would you give to others considering moving abroad?

..du know a thing about this

What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?

Mexican people have very strong family values, so you may be comfortable in a relationship with a mexican who may make you part of their lives and even introduce you to their families. Most of women are truly looking for a marriage and have the disposition to date with drunks, it's like a cultural issue, and men may find hard to find personal space while sharing life with a mexican. My advice is: not to be confident with every person that is friendly", most of men are married and have a low respect for their relationship. Make note of that.
