Expat Advice: Relationships in Kingston, Jamaica

Submitted by lala718

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Kingston

What is your current status? Are you single, dating, in a long-term relationship, married or divorced?

I'm married.

What is it like in your country of residence for someone with your relationship status (married/divorced/dating)? If you're single, how do you meet other people? Do English-speaking people tend to gravitate to certain parts of your city?

There is no language barrier.

If you have children, what advice would you give to others making a similar transition to your country of residence?

I have 2 kids ages 8 and 3.There are good public schools but the patois language is very rampant within them, the private schools tend to curb the language more, thus using the English language, so for someone coming from overseas, I'd recommend private schools.

If you do not have children, do you generally spend your social time with other expat couples? If not, what else do you like to do as a couple?

We haven't moved yet but our house is pretty much close to completion so we could go anytime. We visit Ja a lot as both myself and my husband are Jamaican born. We don't choose to associate with people based on nationality, class or culture, cause we enjoy the mixture. Just choose your crowd wisely, that is, people who are motivated and going somewhere in life and are positive.

If you are married or in a relationship with a person of another nationality, how has this experience enriched you as a person. What kind of challenges do you face?

Both my husband and I are Jamaican, however, based on experience, my mother is Jamaican, my dad is British likewise alot of people I know and as a Bridal Consultant I have not seen any challenges when it comes to this other than if one person is fluent in English and the other partner not from an English speaking country then there lies a language barrier.

What would be the best advice you could give someone with your relationship status that lives in your country of residence? Any other thoughts?
