Comments Print

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School of the Hague

In what town or city is this school located?

Wassenaar

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-1 through 12/13

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bike/Walk/Bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The physical facilities are very nice. HS offers many clubs and an extensive arts program. Some sport options but not really comparable to US High School offerings due to small school size and limited sports programs of international schools. The Middle school also offers sports programs and fine arts activities.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

ASH is known for its excellent transitions program. New students spend several days at school prior to the commencement of the school year testing, determining the best course selections, becoming acquainted with other new students and meeting with student ambassadors. Parents are also welcomed by a very active welcoming committee.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Parents welcomed to the school and invited to participate in the education process. Families are matched with a contact from their home countries to help the adjustment process. The PTA is very active as well as parent involvement in the elementary classrooms. Each school has a Parent Advisory Group that meets monthly to discuss issue that may be of interest. Book clubs based on parenting/child issues are also offered at both the Middle School and High School level.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Individuals considering ASH need to understand that they are really enrolling in an international school, not an American school as the name implies. Most (not all) elementary school teachers are excellent. The Middle School has a wonderful learning environment but tends to run wait-lists so plan early. The High School is adequate though a bit disappointing for the price. Limited class offerings, some teachers lack teaching talent; additionally, priority is given to IB students so non-IB students may have serious scheduling conflicts.
