Parent's Review of King Richard 111 College in Mallorca
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
King Richard 111 College
In what town or city is this school located?
Mallorca
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
British International
What grade levels are represented at this school?
3-18 years
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Car, but there is no parking at the school and the small road where the school is located gets very clogged and dangerous for pupils and the public alike.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Facilities are extremely limited. Pupils are transported by bus once a week to the local sports centre. Very poorly equipped science labs. Very limited subjects to choose from at GCSE level. No air conditioning and the school's refusal to supply drinking water makes the summer months very difficult.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
As my child is English, there is nothing in this area I can comment on other than students being forced to learn Catalan when Castellano is widely spoken. This inevitably takes up valuable time when extra maths and, as it is a British school, English could be taught instead. Regardless of your nationality, students HAVE to learn German and French to the end of year 9 when other subjects could be concentrated on moreso.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There are no parent-teacher organisations, the parents are forbidden to have any groups whatsoever. Many parents meet outside school and many discussions are held but parents' views, whether positive or negative are dismissed.
The only "social" activities that come to mind are sports day, (primary only), Christmas Fair, and the school shows at end of term. I say these are "social" activities as parents are freely allowed to partake and asked to help if necessary.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
If your child is of primary age (3-11), then this is a lovely, well organised school. If you wish your child to go through to secondary, have a broad selection of subjects to choose from, a relaxed and constructive relationship with teachers and a high percentage of pass marks to maintain, then this is not the school for you. In a nutshell, this school is not good value for money.
