Parent's Review of New International School of Thailand in Bangkok, Thailand

Submitted by Hits

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

New International School of Thailand

In what town or city is this school located?

Bangkok

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International (IB)

What grade levels are represented at this school?

primary and sec.

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

private transport, vans, walking, water taxi, sky train etc. etc.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Constantly improving, great improvements in the last few years only. The basics are fine - pool, gym, multi-purpose field, theatre. Amazing IT labs, really preparing students for the world they will live and work in. ECAs varied and good opportunities for interactions w. the thai community and for developing social responsibility.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Have not had to deal with either, but have found the teachers receptive, supportive and open to discussion for the most part

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

I'm not that involved in the school parent scene, but can say that there is a great system of nominating class parent leaders who keep in touch w. the parents and engage us regularly - nice extras - parenting seminars, arts lectures, coffee mornings etc.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Great school if you would like to have an environment in which your child could become a well-rounded individual who strives for excellence in every field. The school is filled w. kids who are given the opportunity to maximise their potential (academic and otherwise) and so are high-achievers. Kids seem very open-minded, expressive, confident and well-behaved in large groups - have seen a large group of older kids from another school who visited my office cafetaria for lunch and were amazingly rowdy. Despite being from mostly privileged backgrounds (not all are) the NIST kids seem quite grounded. This being said my daughter does not require special support. I'm sure that any 'normal' kid will do well there, can't say anything about if there are special language support needs etc.. etc..

Noticed one of the other comments about the sports coach and the advice to have a look at another school - had to say that I attended one soccer final where the winning team (from one of the recommended schools) was found to have fielded more players than allowed, and to have also played students who were older than allowed under the rules .. It was clear that the most important thing was winning the game, and it didn't matter how this was achieved... or this would shape the values of the kids.
