How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school is growing quickly, and so the present facilities are being used as creatively as possible. Plans exist for a new facility, which will be built over the coming couple of years. The school has activity times three times a week for the younger children, and a student organization that plans events on occasion. The relatively small number of students precludes many after-school activities, but the town has many opportunities for parents who want to get out of their bubbles to find them. Swimming, tennis, piano, dance, etc.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
With the large number of Italian students, there is a program to help Italian students be prepared for repatriation. Otherwise, there isn't anything for students from other countries - just normal education. However, teachers seem to be willing to help if possible.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There is a Parent Support Group, which is pretty active. Parents support a variety of school activities, including spring and winter concerts, international day, fall festival, and other projects. Again, for the parent willing to take initiative, there are many opportunities.
Atyrau is not Paris or Rome, so personal initiative is a plus in any case, as there isn't so much to do. For families with small children, it is a pretty good place. Older kids might struggle being here as there aren't so many options in the city.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
If your most important thing is that your family stays together while one spouse works in the Kazakhstan oil industry, it's not a bad place. If you come with an upbeat, positive attitude, and look to be part of solutions rather than part of problems, you can do fine here. I have been happy with the quality of education my child has received, and more importantly, my child is happy here.
