Parent's Review of Chatsworth International School in Singapore

Comments Print

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Chatsworth International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Singapore

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

international

What grade levels are represented at this school?

k-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

By bus. There is no late bus service for the after school activities. I sometime go pick up my kid by car, but the parking space is very limited and so crowded that you have to arrive at school 30 minutes before students are dismissed.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Very poor. Because of the excellent location (for those who live in the center of the city), the space is so limited. The swimming pool is the size of the bath tub!! I do like the school, but I can not stand the facilities. The building is very old. You would feel that the ceiling is going to fall on you. They participate many sports event outside. I think they are trying to compensate their poor facility.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

They have a ESL class. Teachers are well skilled. They would give your child a special attention if you ask for it.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

I am not sure, but there some city tour planned by PTA.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If your child is still in kindergarten or lower primary, this school is very good. The teachers are warm, the atmosphere is very family like. I do like this school, I think we made a right choice but many students will change school once they are accepted to their first choice. As you may know, all the international schools here in Singapore are full. Some of the prominent schools have a waiting list of 2 years. Chatsworth is a good school to stay temporary.

Chatsworth teaching has been very strong - my kids have done better here than in England (at good schools). The facilities are not great. Poor, in fact - which is a shock given the school's owners make a nice profit each year. School management is simple - do as you are told, criticise nothing, or get thrown out (I know several examples of this). The school know they can get parents waiting for better schools, so seem to know they do not have to try hard. If I could get the teachers to all move to a new school with decent facilities and not run by a dictator with no interest in children...but there you go.

A very badly run school with high staff turnover. Parent involvement was unwelcomed and discouraged. This is a very successful profit making business. The premises are old and badly maintained. There is also a high percentage of non-English speaking children in the classes. Parents try to transfer their children once they see the problems in the education and management.

I agree with the comments about poor facilities and bad management/school leadership. My impression was the focus was on counselling rather than academics. Principals did not seem very knowledgable. Very high staff turnover - the better teachers never stayed long. Seemed like every year there was a mass exodus. As with most parents we knew it was a holding pen until we could find somewhere else.
