Parent's Review of Kiettisak in Vientiane

Comments Print

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Kiettisak

In what town or city is this school located?

Vientiane

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre school through to year 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most kids find their own way to school. There is a school bus, and some kids are dropped off by their parents.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are ok, though to be honest the school grounds are a little small for the number of children enrolled in the school. There are a number of functions that kids can attend, such as valentine's Day and Halloween parties. There are also Friday Clubs.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

My child was tested before being admitted to ensure that she would enter the appropriate grade for her abilities.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Not really.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

We investigated Vientiane International school and spoke to some parents who had enrolled their children there. Number of them were very dissatisfied with the high cost of the fees. Kiettisak offers the IGCSE and A levels, which are at least the equivalent of the IB. They are also a Cambridge accredited school. I am very happy with the standard of tuition - there are some excellent teachers there and from what I can gather, the standard of tuition is at least equivalent to that of VIS, which charges more than four times the fees. I can thoroughly recommend this school to anyone desiring a good school for their kids.

As a current teacher at Kiettisack, I would say that this report was written by someone from the "other international school" in Vientiane mentioned above. I would suggest that anyone, expat or otherwise, visit the school first and also talk to the staff. Many of the staff here are actually more highly qualified than staff at the "other place" where you have an unqualified Math teacher teaching Math and an unqualified English teacher teaching English. Kittisack is in fact accredited by Cambridge University as an IGCSE school. The IGCSE is a qualification that actually carries more weight and has more rigor than the IB. It is a shame that this sort of nonsense gets posted due to jealousy because a school is losing its students.

If the school was accredited it would be very transparent and have set policies, pay scales based on qualification, and meeting standards of other international school. I does not do this at this time. It needs to think of retention, better pay, and quality for the money. It may be low but it still lacks quality in many areas.

The school is actually accredited by Cambridge University. Perhaps "guest" thinks Cambridge university is not an international institution - what can I say to this? The fact that 40% of the Year 12 students achieved an A in the IGCSE exams is testimony enough of the school's standard of tuition.

FYI, Cambridge is not a accrediting body. An international accrediting body, Like CIS, SACS and WASC will come to a school and look at all aspect. Cambridge is a program of curriculum that requires barely nothing on a schools part.

FYI you appear to have little knowledge of the inspections carried out by Cambridge. Another person posting with no knowledge.
