What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

The British School of Houston

In what town or city is this school located?

Houston

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British/International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

PreK to 9th Grade (Nursery to Y10)

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

By school bus or by car pooling

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school was originally a US High School so there is a lot of space that is being refurbished and used. The school has two libraries, two computer suites, good gym facilities, Science labs, Music room, Art room and reasonably sized classrooms.

The School has several teams for Soccer, Rugby, Cross Country and also offers Dance, Drama, Fencing and Basketball. Teachers offer club activities after school on two days a week. Visiting instructors teach the full range of musical instruments

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school teaches the National Curriculum and GCSEs and so it is good for British Expats. American and International families choose the school because of the structure, values and caring nature that exists. There is a Transitions group made up of parents and staff who help new families settle. Classes operate a buddy system for new entrants

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The school is a good focus for parents. It organises social events such as visits to big sporting events and it runs two Golf days a year for parents staff and students followed by a barbeque.

Each class has a parent rep who hosts regular coffee mornings and lunches and then the rep reports to a meeting with the HT. There is a School Consultative Group which acts as governing body with elected representatives

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The quality of teaching and learning is high with a good team of UK recruited staff. It offers continuity for British families and a high standard of education for US and International families. IT is quite expensive in comparison to other Houston schools but worth it for the successes that children achieve
