Parent's Review of Kiettisack International School in Vientiane, Laos

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Kiettisack International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Vientiane

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International/Local

What grade levels are represented at this school?

k-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Parents bring them. My kids ride their bicycles.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are medium-good They have student council and basketball...maybe more

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The curriculum follows IGCSE, which is endorsed by University of Cambridge International Examinations, which students must take. Similar to US's SATs

My daughters were born and raised in Thailand and moved here 5 years ago so I can't answer with any expertise except it is better than the curriculum I withstood in the US in the 1970s. However, overall I'm happy with the curriculum

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

This is the weak point. During the opening week, they hold a parents' night. This is an excellent opportunity to meet your child's teachers who describe the coursework.

Then at the end of the year we get the annual school show.

No parent organizations, which is a shame, bit parents are as much to blame as the school.

Teachers and staff are always available for consultation. I have often visited the school to discuss issues. I offer my expertise, and they use it.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If you are paying out of pocket, this is the most cost effective school in Laos and Thailand. The teachers are tough and don't hand out good grades. They give great input. It's not a pay-and-pass school. Kids are expected to work.

After Grade 6 its all English. Pre-6 is 50/50 Lao/English.

The main reason I moved from Thailand to Laos is because I found a cost-effective school with a good curriculum and teaching staff in my price range.

Yes. I'd consider enrolling my child in this school.
