Parent's Review of Colegio de la Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Colegio de la Ciudad de Mexico

In what town or city is this school located?

Mexico City

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International / Local

What grade levels are represented at this school?

nursery - high school

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

In the youngest grades, most children are driven or walk.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school's location in central Mexico City may account for it's small size, though the age of the building and the lack of color are disappointing. The classrooms and play areas are adequate, but not more. There are a handful of extracurricular activities in afterschool workshops - including soccer, cooking, general sports, etc. The activities are about 30 minutes.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school has been extremely disappointing from this perspective. There was no effort to place my child in a class with other international students, although there are plenty in the grade. Moreover, there was little if any attention to the fact he didn't speak the dominant language of the school (it advertises as bilingual, but it is Spanish with a bit of English during the day.) The school was unable to answer questions I had about the curriculum, and did not provide any information for parents in English.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a one hour lecture for 100+ parents, which consists of teachers reading powerpoint presentations. There are two parent teacher meetings during the year, but only at the end of the semester. There is no opportunity to communicate with the teachers otherwise, except via email to the director of the school. There is no information provided, via the school or the PTA, about contact information for children in the grade. It was suggested parents "find someone who has been at the school for years and see if they can help track down contact information." For parents with younger children, this makes scheduling playdates very difficult. Drop off and pick up doesnt allow for any communication among parents, as parents remain in their cars.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would suggest they enroll at the school only if they are looking for a purely local experience. My children have been at three international schools in three countries, and this school is not international.
