Parent's Review of Sri Murni in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Submitted by fionamac

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Sri Murni

In what town or city is this school located?

Kuala Lumpur

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Local school with an International Department

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus or car

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

This is a local school that got permission from the Government to open an International Department. Unfortunately, it did not hire international teachers and was severely under-resourced. When the teachers discovered that we had UK textbooks, they asked to photocopy them for the school! While my son was accepted by his peers in the school, there was no opportunity for after-school socializing as the local children all had tutoring and study after school. This left him very isolated. There were also bullying issues that culminated with a large bookcase being knocked over on top of him. At that point, we removed him from the school and homeschooled him instead. Fortunately, I had homeschooled him in the UK and so had many resources that I could use. I am also a former teacher. The homeschooling was very effective and now my son is studying a History Honours Degree in the UK. Since then, we have even placed our homeschool educational resources on a website for others to use - www.lesson-library.com

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

There was no help or information provided about the curriculum that the school would use. We were not given any information, other than vague promises that all would be well.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There were sports 1/week and we attended one end of term concert but we were not informed about any other social groups or activities. There was no parent-teacher organization, and no parent's' night meetings.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would suggest that if parents want their children to go to an international school, they should send them to a large, well-established school with an excellent reputation. I would avoid local schools with international departments until they were well-established, with a proven track record. Alternatively, I would suggest considering homeschooling which enables parents to closely monitor their child's learning and builds trust and communication within the family.
