Tasis The American School in Switzerland

Lugano

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International, 30% English mother tongue and about 50+ different nationalities

What grade levels are represented at this school?

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus/Car/Walk if you can afford living in the area

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The campus is really beautiful. Lots of new facilities have been added in recent years and further expansion is expected. There are now large sports facilities and a newly completed arts center. New science center is being built at the moment. Some buildings are historical and really beautiful, but may have some practical limitations. Vast extra curricular activities ranging from writing clubs to sports clubs.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

My children are in third grade and fourth grade. The school headmaster met us and recommended books to better prepare them for the change of school program. Once they started, they were graded during the first week and placed in groups depending on their levels at the various academic subjects. I know from other parents that extra help/tutoring is made available if a child needs it to catch up.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There's a very active parents association that helps the expat community mingling in. Parents association also helps the school with funding.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Elementary school has improved a lot in the last few years as it's been open just since 2005. High school is more established. Enrolling is becoming more competitive as the school is in great demand, so better apply early enough. Children have lots of homework to do and are continuously challenged by moving them from one grade to a higher one, once they improve, so get ready to a lot of parent support at home.
