Parent's Review of Singapore American School in Woodlands

Comments Print

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Singapore American School

In what town or city is this school located?

Woodlands

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

pre-K through High School

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most children ride a bus which is organized through a third-party organization and is super. Children living in the Woodlands neighborhood adjacent to the school, typically walk to and from school.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities at SAS are incredible! There is something for everyone at the school including, but not limited to a wide variety of sports (some levels of which are highly competitive),art classes, and language classes.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The support system from the administrators, counselors, and parents, is fantastic. There are resource instructors available as well. The parents are very well connected and there is ample opportunity to find resources to assist you with any individual need your child may have.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The PTA is very active as is the Boosters. The parents work very hard to organize and sponsor numerous exciting events throughout the year including international food fests, a county fair, and several evening events for parents. Parents can be very involved...volunteering opportunities are always available. The school is supported very well both by the local community as well as the ex-pat community.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The Singapore American School is fantastic. The school is very large so be prepared if you are coming from a smaller school environment. Although and "American" school, there are students from all over the world attending which adds a celebrated multi-cultural flair. To maximize your own experience, (as well as your child's), get involved.

The school is the most expensive school in Singapore and from experience of my kids, it's not worth the $. While some teachers are excellent, most are average. S$15,000 first year fee just to get in the door is not charged anywhere in SG.

SAS is an excellent school, but if you're not on a full expat package with fees ad extras paid it's very expensive. Currently the admissions fee is $12,840 per student. That's not the annual fee, not the tuition, not the entrance fee - it's a one off payment per child whether you're there one year or 12. That's gone from $5k to $7k to $10k to $12k over 7 years. The total fees (when you include the interim trips, etc are in the $40k range (excluding the one time $12k and the bus costs - $2-$5K depending on distance) for high school students. Lots of extras and fees. The school is good, most of the teachers are good, the parental involvement is good - PTA and organizations can often raise $1M/year for extras - but we still pay the rest. If you can afford it - do it.
