Parent's Review of Aqaba International School in Aqaba, Jordan

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Aqaba International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Aqaba

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British

What grade levels are represented at this school?

ages 3-18

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Car and bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Quite honestly this is by far the worst international school that we have ever come across. The library is the only decent thing the younger children have! After school activities are a bit of a joke, there was basketball this year but with so many kids going in for it, it was total chaos. Other activities were playground games and swimming...but the swimming stopped because locals said it was too cold(!!!). Lunch clubs don't exist. The canteen only stocks snacks that are full of sugar, crisps, chocolate bars, sweets and fizzy drinks. Please note this review is for infant school level.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Nothing at all. There was no buddy system. No orientation day. No welcome area for new parents and students. Nobody showed us round the school, they told us to come in on a day to look around and nobody was there!

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

This school is a local school with very, very few expats so don't expect a community as such. If you offer to volunteer at the school, they will turn you down. Thankfully, the small group of mum's are helpful and kind and are the only ones you can rely on to find anything or about the goings on. There is no communication at all. Profit is the only thing this school is about.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If your child is in secondary it seems a lot better. More expat teachers and the kids speak English. If your child is between 6&11, good luck! The kids don't mix well, they fight alot and their English is poor, also you have no support. Personally I would run for the hills...or do what a friend of mine has done, and home school. The school seems to be on the up, but let's face it, it can't get worse! Sorry for the negativity peeps, but I wish I could've read a truthful review before we came. At least we would've been a little more prepared!
