Comments Print

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School of Western Australia

In what town or city is this school located?

Perth - City Beach

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre-Primary through Year 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Parents drive mostly, walk or bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The location of the school is lovely as it is 1 km from the ocean and situated in a nature reserve called Bold Park. There is plenty of play space with landscaped courtyards and two playing fields. The buildings are single and double story. The facilities are satisfactory but mostly older buildings. Teachers offer extra-curricular activities like surfing, music, art, soccer. The school doesn't have formal sports teams.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

As ISWA offers both the American Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate curriculums - ISWA prepares children well for post-Perth destinations. The small class sizes and welcoming teachers made it easy for my 3 children to transition easily to ISWA.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The parent community is very active and a very important part of why parents choose ISWA. You will find that it is easy to make friends and be part of the social events ISWA offers. At the elite private schools in Perth - many expats find that it is hard to make friendships. The Parent Association meets monthly and has lunches, golf, family activities every month.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

As ISWA is the only high academic standard, co-ed, non religious school in Perth, your family needs to evaluate what is most important to you. ISWA is smaller and doesn't have the facilities of other private schools, but ISWA has very welcoming students and teachers and parents. Combined with high academic performance and the two curriculums, ISWA was the right choice for our family.
