Parent's Review of Mutiara International School in Ampang, Malaysia

Submitted by expatworld19

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Mutiara International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Ampang

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British Curriculum

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Secondary School

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Very poor. No fire alarm which worries me in case if a fire. Extra- curricular actives are one day a week. No room for these activities because the school was built many years ago and need a serious upgrade. The School hall roof caved in last year. No health and safety measures in case of an accident. Students and teachers sit on plastic patio chairs while the director drives in with her Mercedes. The year 11 graduation took place in the parking lot because the school can't afford to make changes to the school. There is mould in the ceilings (a teacher had a dead rat in her classroom last year). This is not an international school. They just put the label on it.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

No programs really. Mostly local teachers who have never taught in other countries so the lessons are very traditional. School can't afford expat teachers and decided to hire local teacher to teach English (which is a standard subject).

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Very few.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Don't waist your money. The directors pocket it all. Go see for yourself. Wear a construction helmet in case the roof caves in on your head.
