Expat Advice: Working in Vancouver, Canada

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Vancouver

What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?

The main industries within this city are insurance, restaurants, production companies which lend itself to lots of office jobs. The banking industry over here is very prominent if people have experience already they can use this to acquire positions of any kind within the banking industry. Office jobs are abundent also, and as long as you have fluent english and have a nice customer service attitude you can find it easy to get a job!

What type of work do you do and how did you find your job?

I am currently out of work due to the recession in BC, Canada, however there are many employment agencies and websites for finding work of any type including Monster.ca and Jobbank. The most important "rule of thumb" I have found is that it is useful to have a computer at your disposal and an up to date resume.

How did you obtain your work permit? What advice would you have for others about work permits?

My work permit was included within my immigration process.

Have you taken language and cross-cultural training courses to prepare for your assignment? If so, how have they helped you on the job?

No, I had fluent english already.

What advice would you offer others about finding jobs and working abroad?

Be organised. Have all of your written references from each position you have ever worked in as this is your own personal "proof" that you are worthy of getting the job which you are applying for. Also, pass your canadian driving test asap and get a car, although the transport system is good over here, sometimes companies will look more favourably on those who can drive themselves to work. Be clear, dress to impress (even if it is a casual environment, remember that you are being observed!) be polite - always to everyone no matter what. Always be the best that you can be, and you shall be recognised as such!
