Describe your group.

The Tamil Nadu Rugby Football Union is a legally registered non-profit society with the goal of developing the sport of rugby union football in South India. We currently have 4 adult clubs playing in Chennai and have launched an ambitious rugby development programme in schools. There are now 4 orphanges playing rugby that are fully sponsored by the TNRFU. 2003 goal is to have 12 schools playing rugby in Tamil Nadu and 6 adult clubs. In addition the TNRFU has helped get rugby started in Pondicherry, Kerala and Bangalore in South India.

What is unique about your organization?

The TNRFU is administered by a Board Of Directors including two expats. The TNRFU is developing a new sport utilizing business practices. We have employed a Technical Director and have initiated a comprehensive coach and referee training course. The union now employs 4 local coaches picked from players from economically challenged backgrounds.

What kind of activities does your group sponsor?

Rugby training in schools, orphanages and universities. Local tournaments are conducted as well as two national tournaments.

How often does your group meet?

Training takes place thrice weekly with games on the weekends.
