Expat Advice: Having a Baby in Hong Kong

Comments Print

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Hong Kong

How recently did you give birth in the country that you are reporting on?

2006

Describe your experience giving birth there. What type of facility did you go to? What (if any) type of pain management did you use? How long did you stay in the hospital? Was it a positive experience? Etc...

I am a midwife myself and wanted a homebirth for my fourth child. I had an uncomplicated pregnancy and a very peaceful, unmedicated home birth. I used my midwife from Australia and flew her into Hong Kong two weeks before my due date. My baby was born ten days overdue in the early hours of the morning by candlelight!

How did you choose your doctor, midwife or other type of medical professional?

I had used the same midwife for a home birth two years earlier in Australia.

If you were to have another child in this country, would you do anything differently in terms of preparation and/or the delivery?

No, if I am to have any more it will be at home - where ever my home may be.

If a friend of yours living in the same country were expecting, what advice would you give her?

Well, I am a midwife, so I would give them all the options available to them and they and their partner would need to choose the best option for their baby's birthday!
