Dining Out in Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre, the capital of the most Southern state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul has a great influence of the German and Italian and Portuguese settlers. The typical food in our state is the "churrasco"/barbecue (meat roasted in spits) and the "feijoada", spiced black beans with a variety of beef and pork meat eaten with white rice, manioc flour, sliced oranges, chopped hard boiled eggs and vegetables. (The drinks are either "caipirinha" made with squeezed lemon, ice, sugar and cachaca/sugar cane alcoolic beverage or beer). However, the city offers a wide variety of restaurants for all tastes and budgets.

In one of the nicests neighborhoods in town called Moinhos de Vento, there are some streets like Fernando Gomes and Padre Chagas that present a large concentration of restaurants, cafes and pubs. As we don't have the habit of going out for breakfast there are only a few cafes that just started opening in the morning besides the hotels that generally offer an excellent breakfast.

Just for precaution we are going to supply you a sample of some good restaurants presented according to their ethnic groups or specialties:
