Summary: Yolanda Solo, Author of "Spain: The Expat Survival Guide" gives relationship-saving advice for people contemplating or preparing to move abroad. While she focuses on Spain, her advice is universal.

1. Spain Won't Fix A Bad Relationship.

Moving to Spain is not like going on a second honeymoon. If you and your partner are having problems at home then these will become magnified in Spain. So don't even think of upping sticks and leaving the security of home behind until you're both sure you are with the right partner.

*TIP* Don't gamble your shaky relationship by putting you and your partner through additional stress and unfamiliarity.

2. Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

You won't have your friends, family or work mates around to distract you from all the little things that drive you crazy about your partner and vice versa. So be forgiving and remember to keep your criticism and niggles to yourself. Things will be easier as you begin to make new friends in your new home.

*TIP* Learn Spanish before you arrive to help you integrate and make new friends as quickly as possible and include holidays to visit friends and family in your budget.

3. Know What Bugs Your Partner and Support Them

While, of course, it is a generalisation. it seems that women suffer more with missing family and friends while men tend to suffer more frustration learning the language and adjusting to the change in work opportunities. Whatever seems to be getting your partner down, be sure to talk to them and let them know you understand.

*TIP* Find a way to keep regular contact with those at home to avoid feeling isolated e.g. phone, email, messenger, facebook, etc.

4. Don't Get Stuck With This Killer Dilemma

Perhaps one of you loves Spain from the moment you land, while the other just can't wait to leave? Many couples are faced with the dilemma of returning home when one partner is unhappy ... or going their separate ways. The best way to avoid this heart-breaking scenario is to talk honestly about your feelings before even considering relocation. If you don't want to live in Spain, be sure to tell your partner before you leave for good hoping it might grow on you.

*TIP* If financially possible, do not sell your home until you are sure both of you are happy with the move.
