Summary: One couple traveled throughout Mexico in search of the perfect place to live - a city with beauty, easy of living and affordability. Tequisquiapan was the answer!

We have lived in Mexico 8 years and have driven over 10,000 miles in Mexico searching for the the best place to live for the dollar. Tequisquiapan fills the bill in every way!

Tequisquiapan is located in the Mexican state of Queretaro. Tequis as it's called by the locals, dates back to the 16th century making it quite a colonial town. The municipality's population is almost 60,000. Tequis is about a 12 hour drive from the U.S. border.

Tequis is a very clean, beautiful Mexican town. The streets are swept daily and trash is picked up daily. There are many beautiful hotels in town - rates starting around $40 a night. Many hotels have hot thermal waters. There is an American who has an apartment building that rents apartments for $150 - $250 a month.

The mild year-long climate and clean streets allows you to walk the streets in pleasure year round. Bougainvillea's are everywhere - draping the walls of homes in town. The plaza is surrounded by lovely shops and side walk cafes. There are many gated communities in and around town. One has an 18 hole hole golf course. Home prices generally range from $80,000 to $150,000 USD depending on where they are located and whether they are new. Americans, Germans, Austrians and Canadians live in Tequisquiapan.

In terms of shopping, there is a Wal-Mart, Costco, Sams, Home Depot, Office Max and several other big stores near Tequis. Many fine restaurants and shops and a shopping mall are in town. The beauty, ease of living and affordable cost of living are the reasons why we chose to move to Tequis.

Examples of cost of living in Tequis:

# 1 Health insurance, IMSS as it's called in Mexico, costs $270 USD a year, which breaks down to $22.50 a month. Insurance covers 100% of doctor visits, hospital stays and drugs with no co-pays.

#2 The average electricity bill here are $15.00 a month

#3 Water $6.00 a month

#4 Home Taxes average $30.00 a year

#5 Fresh Vegetables and Fruit at the Tuesday market under $ 20.00 a week.

#6 Our maid works for us 3 days a week cost $ 27.00 a week.

#7 There are so many wonderful financial advantages to living in this still undiscovered paradise. A couple can live quite well for under $1,000 a month.

I would be happy to answer any questions about living here in Tequis; my email is [email protected]

I see the august weather is somewhat consistent 50s at night and 80s days. Does it rain at a specific time of day and tell me about the winters. Good write up.

How old is this article? Is the cost of living still about the same? If not can it be revised for those who are thinking of relocating to Tequis.

An update would be great as this was published in 2008. How has the cost of living changed? Crime situation? How is the expat community there? Do they meet?
