Do you have any advice or thoughts about culture shock you would like to share?
My advice would be to visit for an extended period before you move. (Continue)

I would recommend staying in Canoa at the Macondo lodge: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/Macondo-Hotel/Canoa/58842 The owner Felix worked as a chef in New England and speaks fluent English and is very friendly and prepares great meals with fresh produce daily.

Racism? OMG! Does racism exist throughout Ecuador, or is this racism you speak of specific to Bahia?

Describe how you "dreamed" expat life would be before you moved overseas. Please provide as much detail as possible.
I am a realist and knew things would be difficult getting used to a whole new culture. But reality check - it is a whole lot HARDER than I ever thought. Mostly that it takes FOREVER to get anything done. Now I knew it took FOREVER before, but somehow forever goes into eternity once you live here. And not knowing the language like I thought I did (at least poco) kind of threw me for a loop. When they say you should know a little, you REALLY SHOULD KNOW A LITTLE! And I can only speak for the town I live in, but the electricity outages are rampant at least 3 times a week anywhere from minutes to HOURS. I was not prepared for THAT although I did know the electricity goes out from time to time?? Time to time? Really???? How about all the time? (Continue)

I am planning to land in Canoa, and I will go on to Vilcabamba. No telling where my travels will lead. This comment about racism is very disturbing to me. If someone could please comment on that, I and it appears others would be grateful! Could you please expand on how exactly racism has manifested itself in your experience? And if your experience allows, can you tell if this is true for the entire country?

If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.
Be ready for a laid-back lifestyle! (Continue)

Another string mentions a big problem with racism. It sounds like your experience may have been different, but have you seen racism? If so, r racism against what race?

I'm white and live with a black man from the US and his Ecuadorian wife. They seem to be accepted w/o any problems.
