Try everything twice! The first time may not be the right time. Try to "go local" form friendships with locals, go to weddings, christenings, graduations etc. Join in the holiday customs, always try the local food and drink. It can be rewarding and is usually a lot cheaper than ex pat food. Try to learn quickly what hand-signs are not considered polite. Also how to greet people (bowing etc). Try to smile a lot when with locals it puts them at ease. Do not show off how well off you are or how culturally better you think you are. It is their country. "When in Rome.....
