Moving abroad is fraught with challenges. A new job. A new environment where – quite possibly – no one speaks your language. This sense of anxiety co-exists with the challenges and possibilities. Choosing the right school is a crucial part of the expat's relocation strategy.

Many parents' first instincts are to look for a home curriculum that mirrors their child’s original school – such as a German looking for the German international school, and an American only considering the American school. In reality there are a myriad of choices available – it could lead to an exciting life experience for the kids. For example, looking at a local school that has an international department.

One of the greatest opportunities for children living abroad is the chance to acquire a new language and culture base. Returning home with the ability to speak Chinese can broaden the child’s horizons and future opportunities.

Most importantly, but often not asked, is what makes the school special? What is the spark or the philosophy that makes it stand out?
