Fine Me

I moved to Chile almost 4 months ago from New York City. I am a writer writing children's cultural stories about Chile. I came here with my boyfriend who is Chilean. When we arrived at the airport I purchased my tourist visa for $160.00 for a stay of 90 days.

A couple of weeks ago I realized I needed to either extend my visa or try to get them to accept my contract with my publisher. I figured either way I was going to have to pay.

First I gave them my contract and was told that it needed to be entirely in Spanish and notorized (they have a thing here for notarization). That nixed that option. Next, I asked about a residence visa since I am living with my Chilean boyfriend. I was told that the relationship had to be consummated. I replied, "right here, in the office?" The agent pretended not to understand English all of a sudden, repeateing the word matrimonio. Finally, flustered she said, "I'm not suppossed to tell you this, but..."

The big BUT,

the cost of renewing your tourist visa is $160.00 for an additional 90 days, but the cost of the fine if your caught in the country without renewing is $50.00.

I thanked her, got up and walked out of the office.
