Difference between Catalunya and Spain
View/Add Comments (0 Comments) |
The first time I came to Spain was when I planned a trip to Barcelona. I am not proud to admit that my general knowledge about the geography of Spain was very low, but I was very surprised to learn that Barcelona is the capital city of Catalunya - where people speak Catalan, a completely different language from Spanish! Along with that, goes an entirely different culture and heritage of which the Catalan people are extremely proud of and are strongly fighting to preserve. Although there are certain influences from Castillian (typical Spanish as it is generally known), Catalan is classified as a language on its own, and not a dialect. In fact, if you try to convince a Catalan that their language is a dialect, you will be very abruptly corrected and met with a very frustrated, if not angered, Catalan temper. Some more differences between the Catalan and Spanish culture can be found here: http://justlandedbcn.com/living-in-barcelona/the-difference-between-catalunya-and-spain/
