Often times, expats look for comfort in making friends with people from their own country and culture. While this is okay, and it's good to have a little bit of home once in awhile, being friends with people from your own country and not with natives will keep you from really getting to know the new place you are in. If you move to a new country and you are trying to learn the language, this is an especially "dangerous" trap because you won't be fully immersed in the language nor the culture. Meeting and becoming friends with the locals is the best way to learn the truth about the new country you're in. The bonus is, if you go back, you'll always have a place to stay!
