1. Feira da Ladra (Thieves Market) every Tuesday and Saturday in Alfama’s Campo de Santa Clara. References to this market date back to the 17th century while its thought the market originated in the 12th century. Stalls sell a wide range of bric-a-brac to clothes, toys and antiques, even prints of old maps, old postcards and photos. [Bus 735 showing “Hopsital Santa Maria” from Cais de Sodre station or Tram 28; Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8 am to late afternoon.]
2. Mercado da Ribeira is Lisbon’s largest foodie market and an architectural gem, across from the Cais do Sodré station. The market dates to 1882, bursting with fresh fruits and vegetables alongside today’s catch and the butcher’s best cuts. The first floor serves as a cultural center and some afternoons offers traditional ‘bailarico’ dance sessions.[Mondays through Saturdays 7 a.m.-1 p.m]
3. Mouraria nurtures a traditional Chinese community in this ancient Moorish quarter. Aromas of Asian and African foods and spices waft from small street-side shops next door to the multi-story Centro Comercial shopping that adds clothing, movies, gifts, home remedies, teas and trinkets. [Metro Green line to Martim Moniz; open daily except Sunday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.]
