Staying-Safe-in-Cape-Town

As a South African who has been living in Europe for the last 6 years, its always amazing how people react when they hear that I am from South Africa. They usually immediately assume that I left the country because of the violence and crime, since they see on so many sources that it is rated as one of the most dangerous places on earth! To be honest, yes..there are parts of Cape Town that are dangerous. EVERY city has dangerous places that you are better off not seeing, or certain parts where you should not get lost after dark. Most of the time, it is mostly a matter of common sense though. People forget that they are in a foreign country, and therefore make it obvious that they are tourists. This is exactly the kind of thing that muggers look out for.

My advice to anyone considering travelling to Cape Town, is to go without thinking twice! It will be one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. In order to ensure your safety, follow these tips:

- Travel with a tour group

- Avoid renting a car, since driving can be dangerous

- Stay in well-lit areas after dark

- Don't carry cash, use your card to pay for meals and in shops

- Try to "blend in" as much as possible and not look like a tourist

These tips should be handy!
