Healthcare in South Africa

Anyone who is considering moving to another country has to give serious thought to how they intend covering the needs for healthcare in their new country of residence. If you are living in Europe or the U.S.A, you grow up with national health insurance that provides fairly decent (and free) healthcare, which is paid for by your taxes and contributions to social security. Unfortunately, things are not as simple in South Africa, where public healthcare is extremely understaffed and underfunded. The richest 20% of the population are using private systems, which are far better served, and nearly 80% of all doctors serve this private healthcare industry. The government is however working towards a National Health Insurance program, although this make take many years to become reality, due to many socio-economic differences between different groups in South Africa. Therefore it is advisable to anyone moving to South Africa to obtain private healthcare from one of the many excellent providers. If you currently have a private healthcare plan, your company may already exist in South Africa, which could make things much easier for you!
