Can we really move overseas?

Almost weekly someone contacts me, asking how we got to the point of living outside the US... and most often, people with children or large extended families say "No, we just can't do it". After a few years of thinking of my answers and reading others', I suggest asking a few strategic questions and discussing your answers with whomever is coming along and those you're leaving behind:
1. What is the goal of this move, both short and long term?
2. Where are we in our lives now?
3. How will we get to a life spent outside the US?
4. Who will be affected by our actions?
5. How will we engage the people affected by our decision? Simply put, you want to be intentional about such an important decision yet you don't want to put it off because of things you don't know, can't control or imagine could be a hurdle.
