Spanish Residency

Anyone who's been to Spain and had to deal with the government in any way knows very well that the difficult-to-deal-with bureaucracy that the Spanish are so famous for, definitely exists! One of the easier parts of dealing with this is when you apply for your National Identity card (or NIE in Spanish). Anyone who lives in Spain for more than 3 months is required by law to register for this since it allows you to open a bank account, rent a place to live, and even to start working. Once you have the number, its yours for life though and you will never lose it. For expats within the EU, you will typically receive a green piece of A4 paper that you will need to carry around with you in case you are requested to show it as a form of identification. For Nationals from other countries, you are provided with a credit card type of identification, stating your address and your unique NIE number.
