Cost of living

The cost of living in Uzbekistan depends on what you want. If you shop for local produce, it's pretty cheap, even taking into account the market traders' tendency to charge foreigners a little extra. Imported goods are expensive however. I recently saw a jar of peanut butter for about 8 pounds / 11 US dollars! Electronics are also expensive. Taxis cost about 1 to 1.50 US for any in-city trips and the metro is less than a dollar for any journey. Beers cost about 2 dollars in a pub, local food and restaurants are cheap, while attempts at western food are moderately priced, by western standards (though you may not think them good value). Long-distance train journeys are very cheap by British standards, for example the 3.5 hour trip from Tashkent to Samarkand costs about 25 USD.
