Education System in Jamaica

The education system in Jamaica is similar to the British system. Most kids attend a primary or prep school up to age 11 or 12 (grade 6) and then go to a high school or a secondary school. There is an entrance exam given at the end of primary school and those who score well can go to the high school of their choice. School is technically free, but schools will often charge fees to make up for shortfalls from the government. In general the education is more rigorous than the typical American school, assuming you get into a good high school or prep/primary school. The schools in the inner cities tend to be in terrible shape. There is a great shortage of spaces in high schools. For expatriates, it is very difficult to get your kids into one of the free high schools since space is so tight and Jamaican kids are accepted on the basis of the exams. Expats will normally send their kids to one of the private schools. Some of the best-known ones in Kingstson are Hillel Academy, Mona Prep, American International School of Jamaica.
