Learning More about Jamaicans

If you saw my other tip on websites, you've done some reading about Jamaica before you landed. So what should you do once you land to get more acclimatized? Visit a church, even if you are not a religious person. Jamaicans tend to be religious and it’s a good way to get inside the culture without being too obvious about it. Listen to the radio. Almost every station has a call-in show where listeners bellyache on the issues of the day. Check out some of the cultural happenings, like the highly regarded NDTC dance company, which gives shows in the summer. If you happen to work with Jamaicans don’t be afraid to ask them where are good places to go and places to avoid. There are plenty of places Jamaicans avoid, just like an expat should, because of crime. Above all, take a zen attitude to things whenever possible. Efficiency is not prized here so no point getting yourself worked up about the length of time it takes to get things done or to get from one place to the next. If you develop a “no problem” attitude, you're less likely to get an ulcer and you'll enjoy your time more.
