The British don't use napkins or paper towels like Americans do. In America, you wouldn't think of sitting down to eat or even getting a to-go meal from a take-away without receiving napkins but this is not the case in the UK so don't be surprised when you end up wiping your hands on your pants after taking a bite of your burger!

On a computer keyboard, the symbols for @ and " are switched. This takes a little while to get used to.

A sweater is a jumper; fries are chips; chips are crisps; homemade flaky biscuits are scones; and crunchy crackers are biscuits. Everything closes at dark or before. You will not see many things open 24/7 like you do in the US.

Cursing is more common, even in professional settings. They do not censor cursing out of movies and television shows like in the US. The date is written as day/month or day/month/year.

Time is in military time. £1 and £2 are coins not paper bills.

For your birthday, you are responsible for bringing the cakes to share!

Age to drive: 18; Age to drink: 18; Age to buy cigarettes:16. Most cars are fueled by diesel not petrol.

Council (property) tax is paid for by the tenant, not the owner, if a property is rented out.

Must obtain a TV license to own a television in the house.
