Tipping in the UK

This was one of the most difficult things for me to get used to as an American - tipping in the UK. Restaurants and pubs are run differently in the UK than in the US. They pay their staff higher wages and also do not always have a dedicated server to your table. In pubs, you will go to the bar to order both drinks and food. You will tell them a table number then they will bring your food once it's ready. You will not have someone constantly coming by to bring you more drinks, napkins, ketchup, etc. If you need something, get up and ask for it. Because of this, tipping is not required like it is in the US. If you are feeling generous or the service was superb, you can obviously still tip, but it is not necessary and will usually catch the staff off their guard. You also do not hand over your credit card to be taken away by the waiter; they will bring the hand-held credit card machine to your table or at the bar for you to use right there in front of them. There is no option to add a tip further proving that it isn't the norm or required.
