Exit tax in Costa Rica for non-flyers
View/Add Comments (0 Comments) |
The exit tax at Juan Santamaria International Airport has been around for many years and is well known. Starting in November last year, however, there is a new tax for land travelers leaving Costa Rica. The "roadway" tax is $5 but there was a catch. It could not be paid at the border! Travelers had to pay at a Bancrédito branch before arriving at the bordert. Because of this and the fact that the new tax was not well publicized, there was a lot of chaos at border crossings and great inconvenience to travelers. Now the tax can be paid at CoopeAlianza branches and at Peñas Blancas (Nicaraguan border) and Paso Canoas (Panamá border) there are ATMs where you can make payment.

View CREnvy's ProfileI'm on my third career in life that of being voluntarily unemployed! The first two were house construction and later hi-tech as a software engineer. I was fortunate to be able to retire early in Costa Rica back in '07. With my wife and younger son we bought land and built a dream house with that million-dollar view you hear so much about. We spend time raising coffee, bananas, and fruit trees. My wife is an accomplished artist and has discovered new media to express herself here including beautiful ceramic mosaics. Pura vida! P.S. Now, in 2021, planning our next move ... to México!
