Just several kilometers from coastal town Dominical on the road to San Isidro de El General is a wonderful private park called Reptilandia. The grounds are beautiful and shady and feature over 70 enclosures outdoors for snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, frogs, crocodiles. It's a great way to learn to distinguish venomous from non-venomous snakes in Costa Rica. There are often several bird species visiting the ponds too. Admission is $12/$6 for adults/kids and they are open 7 days a week. Fridays are best as that is the weekly feeding day.
