The Legend the Reality ~ Ecuador's Jaguars

The jaguar is the largest feline in the Americas. They are part of the folklore of the Amazon. The population of jaguars has been dropping for a variety of reasons - One is loss of habitat. Jaguars require large areas to hunt and survive. Other reasons include the killing by farmers and the hunting of jaguars for their skin and fangs. According to one study, there are only 1.5 jaguars for every 100 square kilometers in Yasuní National Park. At the Cuyabeno Reserve, their numbers are even lower. The situation is even more dire in Brasil's Atlantic rainforest where only 250 adult jaguars remain. That's an 80% reduction in just 15 years. At this time there is no protection in Ecuador from hunting of jaguar as there is in neighboring countries. Hopefully that will change.
