Modest updates in 2014/15 to the requirements to renew a temporary residency visa (to live in Portugal beyond 6 months) include:

1. If you have domestic USA health care coverage, your policy must indicate it covers up to $30,000 of costs incurred in a Schengen country.

2. Proof of financial means now requires the equivalent of 50,000 euros in accessible cash...it can be in your checking or savings account or in investments but the bank account is preferred. You can use US bank accounts, Portuguese bank accounts or a combination. This threshold has sufficed for couples as well as for single persons.

3. Costs for the annual residency visa are currently at 157,80 euros per person.

Note: the initial Residency Visa [Titulo de Residencia] is good for one year. It is then renewed, which is good for two years, and renewed again for one year, At this point, you reach the 5-year mark; going forward you renew every 5 years.
