Medical Care In Lithuania

If you get seriously ill in Lithuania, please consider going back to your home country if possible - Serious healthcare problems can be very, very risky in Lithuania. If you live in Vilnius or Kaunas, it may not be as bad, but please know that bribes and "gifts" go a long ways in this country - whether to doctors or nurses. They will not ask you outright for these "gifts", but believe me, I have never seen a doctor or nurse turn one down. If cash, it should be in an envelope and given discreetly. Remember at all times: that the doctors and nurses are paid fairly poorly for their jobs, that the old 'soviet mindset" that the doctor is always right and the patient is always wrong still exists to some extent, and many of them do not like their jobs and can be irresponsible unless"motivated" in some way. There are many doctors and nurses who speak no English at all, and level of those who do is usually very low, making communication difficult and causing misunderstandings. All things considered, going through the Lithuanian Healthcare System can be a lot like playing in a casino - sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and above all, no one is ever responsible - except you. Beware.
