Renting Cars in Costa Rica

Costa Rica charges more for rental cars than some other countries due to the mandatory insurance you must purchase. It's not that the car costs more, it's the insurance. Here's some tips on how to save money on your rental car. First of all use a credit card that offers rental car coverage. Cards like the Chase Explorer Card, American Airllines Aviator and Citi Business card all offer full coverage on nearly every country including Mexico. You can call your card before heading abroad and ask for the benefits department, then request that they mail you a copy of the coverage as well as where it is accepted. I carry that coverage description with me in my travel bag and always have it to produce for the counter employee who will insist that without seeing a copy of the coverage, you must purchase full coverage when renting. The reality is that Costa Rica does have a compulsory insurance requirement. There are a few companies that include that coverage in their rental car fee, one that comes to mind is Vamos Rent a Car. the entire name is their web address and tell them that Steve from Pacific Lots recommended them. They offer frequent renter discounts of 10% and have even arranged discounts from other rental companies when they had no cars to rent of their own.
